A customer was operating with an aging mechanical edge-of-dock leveler that had deteriorated significantly. Severe rust had compromised the dock’s integrity and was no longer operational, requiring full replacement.
In addition, the concrete behind the right-side bumper had crumbled away, preventing proper mounting of new dock protection equipment and creating additional safety concerns.
In the meantime, the facility relied on a portable dock plate for daily operations, further highlighting the need for a safer, more reliable long-term solution.

Restore Structural Integrity with a Complete Dock Upgrade
Before the install even started, our team of experts had some recommendations. The existing edge-of-dock was 6’6” wide with a standard 15” lip. We recommended to reduce the width to 6’ (72”) during replacement to help minimize the risk of future concrete blowout along the dock edges.
Scope of Work for Edge-of-Dock Leveler Replacement
Northern Dock Systems delivered a full-service solution addressing both the equipment and the dock structure. For this install, our team followed these procedures:
- Ensured proper site sign-in/out procedures with the customer.
- Blocked off the work area with appropriate safety equipment.
- Removed existing edge-of-dock to allow for concrete repairs.
- Poured concrete to restore the damaged curb.
- Returned after curing to install a new Blue Giant mechanical edge-of-dock.
- Commissioned equipment with the customer present.
- Captured completion photos and obtained customer sign-off.
- Removed all debris, leaving the site clean and operational.
We worked with the customer to determine that curing the concrete over the weekend, along with doing the installation after-hours, would provide the least disruption to this Calgary retailer.
