A Customer Success Story from Northern Dock Systems
Project Overview
The Challenge: Cold Air and Wind at a Busy Forklift Opening
This Guelph warehouse operates a 14’ x 12’ ground‑level opening with frequent forklift traffic, requiring the door to remain open for extended periods throughout the day. With two active dock positions and employee desks/work areas immediately adjacent, cold air and wind infiltration became a serious issue—especially during winter months. Employees working nearby were exposed to uncomfortable drafts and low temperatures, which impacted their comfort and productivity.
The Solution: Vertical Industrial Air Curtain
To address the challenge, a Berner IDC14‑4144 Vertical Air Curtain (Ambient) was installed. Due to limited headroom above the opening, a traditional horizontal air curtain was not possible. Instead, the unit was installed vertically, proving that lack of headroom does not limit the effectiveness of an air curtain solution. The vertical installation creates a powerful air barrier across the opening, maintaining environmental separation even while the door remains open for forklift traffic.
Improving Comfort and Energy Performance at a High‑Traffic Ground-Level Opening
The air curtain has dramatically improved employee comfort in the dock and adjacent work areas. Cold drafts and wind infiltration have been significantly reduced, allowing employees to work comfortably throughout the day. As a result, employees no longer need to wear winter jackets indoors, even during peak winter conditions. Importantly, this comfort improvement was achieved without restricting forklift movement or operational flow.
Energy Efficiency and Financial Impact
This project was executed through the Direct Install program from their local utility company, delivering immediate energy and financial benefits to the client.
- Forecasted Energy Savings: $1,438 per year
- Cost to Client: $0 because of a one-time energy rebate from their local utility company, which covered 100% of the project costs.
- ROI: 0 years, achieved through rebates and special program incentives
By maintaining environmental separation while the door is open, the air curtain helps reduce heat loss and supports long‑term energy efficiency—at no upfront cost to the customer.
A Smart Solution for Challenging Openings
This project demonstrates how air curtains can be successfully installed vertically when headroom is limited, delivering the same energy‑saving and comfort benefits as traditional installations. It’s a proven solution for high‑traffic ground‑level openings, especially where employee work areas are nearby, and comfort is critical.
