A Customer Success Story from Northern Dock Systems

Project Overview
Upgrading from Wheel Chocks to a Safer Docking Solution in Guelph
This Guelph warehouse wanted to improve safety at its loading docks. The site was previously using wheel chocks, but the team recognized that chocks rely on manual placement and are not always used correctly or consistently.
To reduce risk and improve control at the dock, the warehouse replaced wheel chocks with Blue Giant StrongArm® HVR303 trailer restraints.
Why Wheel Chocks Fall Short at Busy Loading Docks
Wheel chocks can move, wear out, or be forgotten. They also don’t give dock workers a clear signal that a trailer is safely secured before loading begins.
At a busy dock, this creates uncertainty and increases the risk of trailer movement, which can lead to injuries or damage. The warehouse wanted a safer and more dependable way to secure trailers during loading and unloading.
A More Secure Way to Hold Trailers in Place
The solution was the installation of two HVR303 electric hook trailer restraints. Unlike wheel chocks, these restraints lock directly onto the trailer’s ICC bar, holding the trailer firmly in place.
This direct connection helps prevent trailer creep and unexpected movement, giving dock workers greater confidence that the trailer will stay where it should.
Clear Safety Control for Dock Workers
The new restraints are controlled by a Blue Genius Gold Series III Control Panel, which also connects to the warehouse’s existing Blue Giant Super Capacity Dock Levelers.
This setup helps ensure the dock equipment and trailer restraints work together. Loading operations are safer because the system helps prevent dock activity unless the trailer is properly secured—something wheel chocks cannot do.
Built to Fit the Dock and the Job
The installation included 2″ extension plates, allowing for proper alignment even if bumper positions change over time. This helps keep the system working correctly as dock conditions evolve.
A 4″ manual release key was also included, giving staff a safe way to operate the system during maintenance or power outages.
Designed for Long‑Term Use
The trailer restraints were finished with a zinc primer coating, which helps protect the equipment from rust and corrosion. This is especially important in Ontario, where docks are exposed to moisture, dirt, and road salt.
This durable finish helps extend the life of the equipment and reduces maintenance compared to wheel chocks.
A Safer Upgrade from Wheel Chocks
By replacing wheel chocks with HVR303 trailer restraints, this Guelph warehouse achieved:
- Better control of trailer movement
- Less reliance on manual steps
- Improved dock safety for workers and drivers
- A more reliable, long‑term safety solution
Most importantly, the upgrade helps create a safer loading dock environment every day.
